Counseling Services Provided
Individual Therapy:
Individual therapy is based upon a one on one relationship. Meetings can be varied - once a week, twice a week or bimonthly. During the sessions, the client and I work toward achieving what the client has determined to be the goals in therapy. Achieving goals is determined by the client's motivation and and willingness to partake in the personal change process.
Relationship Therapy:
Our relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and society at large are what connect us and give our lives fullness and meaning. When relationships break down, or when other problems overwhelm our ability to be in relationships with others, we need help.
Couple Therapy:
The bottom line about any relationship that is having problems is that needs are not being met. I will teach you how to meet each other's deepest needs, how to resolve past hurts, how to stop damaging conflicts and how to restore those original loving feelings. The purpose is to teach couples skills for a great relationship. The fact is that most of us didn't learn relationship skills in a direct manner from qualified sources. I will work with the couple and together the couple will learn to discover their pathway to a happy relationship.
Family therapy:
Relationships are our connection to the world around us. Our closest relationships are usually those involving family; our family from birth and the family we create through joining with others and bringing new life into the world. These relationships can be our most rewarding of all. However, when there is a breakdown in these relationships they can be the most painful of all. Counseling can help repair and rebuild these important relationships.
Anxiety:
Almost all of us will experience some kind of emotional distress in our lifetime. It can result from an argument with a friend, a significant loss, or a chemical imbalance in the brain. Emotional distress can cause serious and long-term consequences if it is not addressed.
Depression:
Depression counseling is specific to depression. Most of the time clients come into the office from a very dark place. Some come in with motivation and some do not. It is important that the therapist accept the client at the current state and set behavioral measurable goals. This is important because many times when a person is depressed sometimes therapeutic changes are difficult to recognize.
Trauma:
Trauma is an experience that stems from an extremely stressful or life-threatening situation. Symptoms are varied and can include flashbacks, bad dreams, feeling emotionally numb, avoiding exposure to anything related to the trauma, being startled easily, or experiencing feelings of being on edge. These symptoms can be severe and can get in the way of living your life. Counseling can help you recover and experience healing.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, better known as PTSD, is an acute stress reaction to a traumatic situation. Whether it’s a single event like an accident, or a consistent way of life such as child abuse or domestic violence, some people experience this uncomfortable and intense reaction to the situation. Because of the nature of the traumatic incident, the individual may fear for their life of the life of another. Symptoms of PTSD may include flashbacks or nightmares, an avoidance of thoughts, feelings, or the location of the incident, anger or irritability, and trouble concentrating. Counseling can help you work through some of these issues.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
When choosing a therapist, it’s important to ask what approach they use in therapy. There are a myriad of methods used including psychodynamic, narrative therapy, and Somatic Experiencing. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one approach used to identify and change destructive thoughts and behaviors.
While CBT has been mentioned by some of the great philosophers of our time, it was more formally identified as a useful therapeutic model in the 1950’s as an alternative to the psychoanalytic theory espoused by Freud. It has been researched and modified over the years and is now used as a primary therapeutic technique or incorporated with other approaches to therapy.
The focus of CBT is on identifying the relationship between thoughts and feelings and using this awareness to change behaviors that are dysfunctional and/or sabotaging our efforts toward a happy and fulfilling life. The theory is that we develop automatic thoughts that are triggered by an experience, which will then lead to an emotion. The action that follows is based on these thoughts/emotions.
Addiction
There are different addiction treatment options, but first you will need to determine how severe the addiction is, how difficult it will be for you to overcome this addiction and what level of support you need. People kick addictions from alcohol, smoking, overeating, drug abuse, gambling and sex addiction, and all of these different addictions require different types of intervention.
